FAQs

Setting up your tank is straightforward! Start by rinsing all components (except electrical parts), adding substrate, filling with dechlorinated water, and installing equipment. Allow your tank to cycle for 1-2 weeks before adding fish to establish beneficial bacteria.

For most setups, perform a 25% water change every 1-2 weeks, using a gravel vacuum to remove debris. Clean filter media monthly in old tank water to preserve beneficial bacteria. Regular maintenance prevents water quality issues and keeps fish healthy.

Check that you’re using appropriately sized food for your model. Adjust the portion control dial gradually, testing between adjustments. Humidity can affect dispensing, so keep the unit dry and food fresh for optimal performance.

Yes! Many of our tanks work for both freshwater and saltwater setups. For saltwater environments, we recommend our dedicated marine kits or larger tanks (20+ gallons) with specialized filtration and protein skimmers for stable marine conditions.

Our LED lighting systems are designed for longevity, with most units providing 20,000+ hours of illumination before requiring replacement. That’s approximately 5-7 years of normal use! Proper care includes preventing water exposure and avoiding power surges.

Smaller tanks are suitable for bettas, small tetras, or shrimp communities. Avoid overstocking small aquariums, as water parameters fluctuate more rapidly. We recommend no more than one betta or 4-5 nano fish for this size.

Press the “Set” button to enter programming mode, then use the timing buttons to select feeding intervals (typically 1-3 times daily). Test the system before leaving to ensure proper portion sizes and reliable operation during your absence.

Never rinse filter media in tap water! The chlorine kills beneficial bacteria. Instead, clean filter components in a bucket of old aquarium water during water changes. Replace carbon media monthly, but preserve biological media unless severely degraded.

Initial cloudiness is normal and usually resolves within 2-4 days as particles settle. If cloudiness persists, check for overfeeding, inadequate filtration, or incomplete cycling. Patient cycling is essential for establishing clear, healthy water conditions.

Yes! Most electrical components carry a 1-year manufacturer’s warranty, while tanks typically have a 90-day warranty against leaks and defects. Keep your receipt and product packaging for warranty claims, which can be processed through Petco or our customer service department.
